YOUNGSTERS donned their outfits and props to perform in their nativity plays across the borough this week.

Pupils at Laycock Primary School in Highbury spent weeks preparing for their Christmas show that they performed in front of their parents on Wednesday morning.

The early years pupils – aged three to five – confidently sang songs including Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and a tune about snowmen tumbling down and hitting their heads.

All the pupils wore handmade headbands that resembled reindeer horns or stars and bravely stood up when singing their songs.

Some of the schoolchildren even took to a microphone to explain the story of Christmas to the parents.

Headteacher Emmanuel Keteku told the parents after the half-hour performance that he “loved” watching the early years perform.

“Every year, they’re the first year group to perform their Christmas show and it always reminds me to go buy my Christmas gifts – they were brilliant,” he said.

Speaking after the performance, Mr Keteku said: “They were so sweet, and it takes a lot of guts to take to the stage to perform like that.”

It was the first time Ambler Primary School, in Finsbury Park, had both Year 1 and Year 2 taking part in their Christmas performance.

The show, Lights, Camel, Action, told the nativity story with a Strictly Come Dancing judges format.

Eleanor Sutherland, Key Stage 1 leader at the school in Blackstock Road, said before the show on Tuesday morning: “It’s usually just Year 1… it’s been wonderful see the children in this type of environment, and different children get to shine.”

Three years of children, from reception to Year 2, took part in the traditional nativity at St Andrew’s Church of England Primary School in Matilda Street.

King Abbas, reception teacher and play director, said: “It’s been wonderful preparing it. “The children have been so excited and have been really up for learning their lines and songs. They were looking forward to their parents seeing all of their hard work.”
