Why Trump’s state visit should be opposed

10 May, 2019

US President Donald Trump

• FOR Theresa May to announce that Donald Trump is coming here on a state visit the same week as thousands of people have taken direct action for climate justice can only serve to highlight the many reasons why we should also protest against his visit on June 4.

Trump is one of the world’s most outspoken climate change deniers. Only last November, when his own government released a report highlighting the devastating impact of climate change on both health and the economy, Trump said “I don’t believe it”. He went on to say that America’s air and water is, “right now at a record clean”.

He should try telling that to the residents of Flint, Michigan, where they haven’t had safe water for the last five years and the state health director is facing involuntary manslaughter charges for deaths relating to dirty water. Or to the Native Americans who have been protesting against the Dakota Access pipeline that could destroy the water and food they rely on.

Not only is Trump a climate change denier, but he is also racist and sexist. He stands against all the values that bring our multicultural city together.

He is on record as describing the far right, including the Ku Klux Klan, as “fine people” and formerly included an open fascist, Steve Bannon, in his government.

He has encouraged the systematic deportation of migrant workers, many who have lived most of their life in the US, and his government is responsible for the caging of children at the Mexican border.

Trump has publicly bragged about his sexist actions, about “grabbing” women, and said last year of the #MeToo movement, “It is a very scary time for young men in America… women are doing great”.

There are many, many more reasons why it’s right to protest against Trump’s visit, and when he came last year hundreds of thousands of us took to the streets and stopped him being able to parade through London. It’s important we do the same again.
