‘We’ve won the fans back,’ says Arsenal’s Cech

Gunners goalkeeper says team-mates have shown ‘courage’ to turn things around after humiliating defeat at Liverpool

PETR Cech believes that the “attitude and work ethic” that the Arsenal players have shown over the past month has got the fans firmly back on side.

The Gunners stretched their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Brighton at the Emirates Stadium. The streak has been further reinforced by a more dogged-looking defence that has kept five clean sheets in that time.

The form that Arsene Wenger’s side is now showing is a far cry from that seen during a gloomy Sunday afternoon at the end of August when Arsenal were handed a humiliating and humbling 4-0 defeat away at Liverpool.

Cech says that his team-mates have shown their “courage” to turn things around and that the No 1 goal now is to keep everybody happy.

“We said after the Liverpool game that the only way to bring everybody back on board was to work hard and show our attitude and work ethic through our results and performances,” he said. “We’ve been doing just that, especially at home. We feel like we’ve won the fans back to our side and hopefully we can keep them happy as long as we can.

“Every fan has the right to say if they’re not happy but as players we lead the way and our fans are supporting us home and away. This is great to see.”

Reflecting on Sunday’s latest win, Cech added: “It would have been nice to score more goals against Brighton and to have had the last part of the game a bit quieter, but everybody did their job and I thought that we showed the right attitude to defend the clean sheet and play until the last second.

“As a team, we’re playing really well at the moment. You can see that everybody is doing their job.

“You can always improve, though, and against Brighton we gave away too many balls. We made some rushed decisions, so we can obviously improve that, but as a team the courage is there, so is the defensive attitude and the offensive work. This is the way to go forward.”
