Wenger the next to be linked?

OPINION: In the search for a new Arsenal manager, a heck of a lot of names have been thrown about as reporters play a live guessing game

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger

IT’S now getting to the stage where it might be easier to list the people who haven’t been linked with the managerial vacancy at Arsenal.

With stunning proof that our national football press are largely clueless, reporters have been playing a live guessing game and we’ve seen Mikel Arteta, Eddie Howe, Rafael Benitez, Nuno Espirito Santo, Marcelino, Patrick Vieira, Paulo Sousa, Max Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti, Mauricio Pochettino, the current caretaker Freddie Ljungberg, and so on, have all had their names thrown about.

It’s only a matter of a time before the wheel turns full circle and a hack suggests the club has contacted Arsene Wenger to see if he’s interested.

The Gunners should get a grip on it and make a decision.

In January, there is the chance to refresh the squad – or to put it less politely, TO BUY A FUDGING CENTRE-BACK.

But this work needs to be done by somebody who has been appointed and trusted. One of Unai Emery’s fatal decisions was to try and fix a faulty defence by acquiring David Luiz, a player who a club with a transfer ban was more than happy to let go.

Now, Arsenal need somebody installed and ready to make sharp calls on the personnel on the pitch.

Somebody who does not make Luiz first choice.

Somebody who doesn’t expect Calum Chambers to be able to cross the ball – he’s not a wingback.

Somebody who sees no reason to persevere with Granit Xhaka.

Somebody who can get the best out of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi.

That’s the job spec. Arsenal should stop adding new names to the list of potentials and get on with the project.

Nine great minutes against West Ham United and lots of hugs and smiles at the end of the match should not mask the serious surgery which is required.
