We need decisive action to secure the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe with her husband Richard

• THIS weekend, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe marked the beginning of her third year in detention. She remains arbitrarily jailed in Iran, separated from her husband Richard, their daughter Gabriella, and her life in West Hampstead.

The turnout at this weekend’s vigil in Fortune Green was indicative of the strength of local support and feeling behind Nazanin. The continued media interest is also welcome, but what Nazanin really needs is decisive action from the government.

Last November, Boris Johnson pledged to “leave no stone unturned” in his efforts to secure my constituent’s release. It is a shame that there has been such little progress since.

I have therefore written to the prime minister, with a request that she personally updates both Richard and myself on the steps that her ministers have taken to rescue this innocent British citizen.

The government should offer a public update on their efforts to secure Nazanin’s release. For as long as my constituent remains unjustly detained, I will campaign for her freedom.

Working alongside Richard, I will continue to raise awareness and lobby ministers to expedite efforts to bring her home.
