Tulip Siddiq supports Sir Keir Starmer to be next Labour Party leader

MP wants Starmer-Rayner team at the top

09 January, 2020 — By Richard Osley

HAMPSTEAD and Kilburn MP Tulip Siddiq has confirmed she is supporting her close colleague Sir Keir Starmer in the Labour leadership contest.

The party is searching for a new leader in the wake of Jeremy Corbyn’s decision to step down after December’s general election losses. Mr Starmer, the MP in Holborn and St Pancras, is one of the front-runners among six contenders and yesterday (Wednesday) became the first to reach the 22 parliamentary nominations needed to be on the ballot paper.

The former Director of Public Prosecutions is up against Rebecca Long-Bailey, Lisa Nandy, Jess Phillips, Clive Lewis, Emily Thornberry and Barry Gardiner.

Ms Siddiq, who has worked closely with Mr Starmer since 2015, said: “The number one priority for me when looking at the next Labour leader is who can take us back into power?” She added that she would be supporting Angela Rayner to become the party’s deputy leader.

Ms Siddiq said: “When I made the difficult decision regarding who I would nominate, in my mind I kept thinking who I would want standing at he dispatch box in the House of Commons, taking on Boris Johnson in a forensic, detailed manner – who will hold this government to account.”

While one of the favourites to succeed Mr Corbyn, Mr Starmer has been warned that some members think it is long overdue for a woman to lead the party or are seeking a candidate from further afield than north London.

The winner of the contest will be announced on April 4.
