LUCAS Torreira scored a stunning bicycle kick to see off a stubborn Huddersfield side at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon (Saturday).

The Terriers were on the brink of earning a valuable point with a resolute defensive display. But with 83 minutes on the clock Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang dug out a clever cross from the back post for Torreira to acrobatically volley home from six yards.

“He has those kind of goals in him,” purred Arsenal boss Unai Emery. “He is a quality player, with great commitment.”

Asked if he expected goals of such quality from Torreira, Emery added: “We want to break expectations. He’s very fast in the mind, and fast in the feet. It was a good goal.”

It was a rare moment to remember in an otherwise forgettable match. The first half was more about fouls and diving than quality, producing seven yellow cards – including four in just two minutes.

The biggest crime went unpunished, however, with Alexandre Lacazette almost deserving a booking for his glaring miss, slipping and missing the target from barely 12 yards out.

The French forward did have the ball in the back of the net before the break, but it was controversially disallowed for offside.

The quality was equally lacking after the interval, until Torreira popped up with an overhead kick that earned Arsenal a 1-0 win, and with it extended their unbeaten run to 21 games in all competitions.

Reflecting on the goal, stand-in skipper Granit Xhaka said: “I think he wants to be like Aubameyang or Lacazette! It was an important goal for the whole team because it was not easy.”

Xhaka added: “It was a difficult game, they play one-on-one in the whole pitch. But 1-0 and three points and that is the most important thing for us.

“We still have a lot of things to improve, of course, but we can be happy. It is not normal to go 21 matches unbeaten.

“We have to believe from the first minute to the end, and today again we showed a good character.”
