Title blow for Arsenal Women after defeat at rivals Man City

JOE Montemurro didn’t pull any punches after seeing Arsenal hand the advantage to their title rivals by losing against Manchester City in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.

Goals from Pauline Bremer and Lauren Hemp saw City win 2-1 at the Academy Stadium in what was home side manager Nick Cushing’s final match before leaving to join MLS side New York City as assistant coach.

Danielle van de Donk pulled one back for the Gunners with half an hour left, but City held out to take three precious points.

The win leaves Man City top of the table, three points clear of defending champions Arsenal, now in third.

“We’re very disappointed, we let ourselves down,” said manager Montemurro after the final whistle.

“We need to make sure this stuff doesn’t happen, and it doesn’t usually happen.

“Now we have to forget about what’s happened and build and move on.

“Maybe we lacked a bit of patience in the final third. We got there and we had opportunities, but the important thing is finishing those moves off and we didn’t do that.

“We knew it was going to be an emotional event with it being Nick Cushing’s last game here, but we had enough of the ball, and in the final third we could have done better.”

The bigger winners on Sunday – in more ways than one – were Chelsea. They are now just a point behind City in the table with a game in hand after beating West Ham 8-0 at Kingsmeadow.

Camden-born Blues boss Emma Hayes praised her “relentless team” as the title charge potentially tilted in their favour.

She said: “It was a tremendous effort from everyone and we thoroughly deserved it.

“I didn’t expect that, but the beauty of momentum and winning results and winning positions is that it breads confidence. There is a huge confidence in the group at the moment.

“I believe in the squad, I believe in the team and the spirit inside this group has probably been the best since I’ve been at the club, and with that we can achieve absolutely anything.”
