The Xtra Diary: School chorus steals the show as Joanna Lumley lights up the Save Soho campaign in Berwick Street

Berwick Street Market is 'just divine', says Ab Fab star Joanna Lumley as she helps switch on Christmas lights

JOANNA Lumley may have been the big draw at the Berwick Street Christmas lights switch-on on Tuesday.

But the carol singing from children at Soho Parish School certainly stole the show. The little angels really got the festive celebrations going with their tuneful rendition of many Christmas classics.

There was also live jazz from Charlie Wood at the event that featured a colourful light display installed by Soho’s very own Gods Own Junkyard & Lights of Soho.

Soho councillor Glenys Roberts donned a hard hat as she hosted the show from scaffolding.

Ms Lumley (inset) – clad in a large fur coat – gave her backing to the Save Soho campaigns, adding that Berwick Street Market was “just divine” and the “most adorable place”.

The actress, 70, pressed a large button to animate the tree display.

She later chatted to American actor Harry Shearer, best known for his work on The Simpsons, providing the voice for characters including Mr Burns, Waylon Smithers, Principal Skinner, Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy and Kent Brockman.

And there was sizzling street food and mulled wine from the Berwick Street Market and late night shopping.
