The UK was ill prepared for this pandemic

23 July, 2020

Prime Minister Boris Johnson gives a daily briefing during this coronavirus pandemic

• THE analysis (Why the UK failed the pandemic test, July 9) by two members of the Socialist Health Association was timely.

We’re under no illusion that the Covid-19 coronavirus brought a challenge for the Conservative government when the country went into lockdown on March 23.

But it is a very heart-breaking reality that the British public were not aware that the Health and Social Care Act of 2012 had already damaged the public health system at its core.

It’s even more surprising then that the Conservatives won the general election in December 2019 in spite of damaging the National Health Service and the social care services.

Your Forum writers, Susanna Mitchell and Roy Trevelion are absolutely right to inform us that the United Kingdom was not remotely ready to fight the virus, yet spending cuts and privatisation have left the NHS and social care services unable to function.

The winter 2020 is soon to be upon us, and the majority of people in the UK do not seem very happy with this government which has failed to protect them from the Covid-19 coronavirus.

The only hope is a vaccine for all of us if it comes sooner to take us to our normal way of living and life.
