The Governor pockets top pool prize

16 June, 2017 — By Steve Barnett

Dining at the top table: Governor Michael Slattery

MICHAEL Slattery pocketed a big win on Monday when the best-of-the-best from the Chalk Farm Pool League gathered at the Boston Arms pub in Tufnell Park for a bonanza night of cup finals on the green baize.

The Slattery’s skipper beat reigning champion Sinan Yuce, who plays for Cousins Elite, 3-2 in a best-of-five-frames match to win the Governor’s Shield.

Ladies champ: Rachel Ostridge

There were also mighty roars of triumph from Sir Robert Peel’s Chris Heim after he beat Peckwater Tenants Association’s Paul Smith to capture the men’s singles championship.

At the start of the competition no fewer than 124 players took to the table to try and win the prestigious title but, in the end, the Peel potter was the last man standing as he strode to a 3-0 victory in the final.

Seniors specialist: Roy ‘Rolls-Royce’ Cooper

Peel also pocketed glory in the doubles final where the premier pairing of Sonny Saunders and Danny James beat Ben Scully and Chris Miles from Slattery’s 3-0 to win the competition for the sixth time in nine seasons.

Seniors specialist Roy “Rolls Royce” Cooper, who plays for the Boston Arms, made it seven wins in 10 years as he eased to 3-1 win over Cousins Elite potter John Walters.

The singles No 1: Chris Heim

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Cousins Elite, though, as Peter Berry gave the club’s members something to cheer about when he chalked up a 3-1 victory over Peckwater’s Paul Smith to walk away with the Captain’s Cup.

Meanwhile a tense and nervy ladies singles final ended with Slattery’s star Rachel Ostridge beating Peckwater’s Jane Havell 3-1 to take the crown.

With the season now officially over, league chairman Shaun Pollard is calling for new teams to sign up and join in the action.

“Despite gentrification of watering holes and owners opting to replace pool tables with dining tables, more and more people are taking up the game,” said Pollard.

“We’d welcome new teams ahead of the next season, which gets underway in September.”
