Table-topping school aims to inspire pupils

Head's pride as Hampstead Parochial Primary School tops the tables

Head Allan McLean with Elsa, Alex, Lamin and Shelley: ‘We link our values back to biblical stories which gives them real meaning’

A PRIMARY school in Hampstead has been rated among the best in the country in government league tables.

For the past three years, Hampstead Parochial Church of England School has topped the charts in comparison with schools across the country.

Headteacher Allan McLean said: “It’s not just about standards. It’s about building relationships across all levels with staff, children and parents. “Every day we have school assemblies that focus on our core values that lead to excellent behaviour. We link our values back to biblical stories which gives them real meaning.”

He added: “I think they [pupils] feel proud about their school. They feel a sense that they are part of a community. Hampstead Parochial has successfully nurtured the ethos of a small village school in London.”

Ofsted proposed this month to lessen the focus on test results and league table rankings, where schools with a narrow curriculum could be punished by inspectors.

Mr McLean said: “We welcome the proposed changes by Ofsted. We always look at the wider curriculum and ensure we have opportunities to inspire children. It is fundamental to what we do. “Learning is not exclusively about achieving in exams. It is all significant.”
