Summertime in South East Bayswater

Happy days at the residents association's annual garden party

07 July, 2017 — By The Xtra Diary

The music and the wine were flowing at the annual SEBRA summer party

WITH free-flowing drinks, glamorous guests and plenty of entertainment, some call it one of the key events of Bayswater social calendar.

It was that time of year again, when members of the South East Bayswater Residents’ Association and friends came out on Thursday for the annual garden party.

“You don’t have to kid me,” SEBRA chairman John Zamit quipped, as he called out winners of the raffle.

“I know you’re only here for the food, the drink and the prizes.”

Cities of London and Westminster MP Mark Field was on hand to help give out raffle prizes which this year included free sessions at Queen’s bowling and ice rink in Queensway, a full day’s use of the Knight Frank London taxi and a free dinner at the Prince Regent canal boat cruise restaurant.

The theme was the Queen’s sapphire jubilee, and Mr Zamit donned a fresh blue outfit in her honour.

“I’m famous for only wearing black, but today I’m wearing a blue suit for the Queen.”

Once more, the celeb cardboard cut-outs were in attendance.

Life-size models of Donald and Melania Trump, Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn and Queen Elizabeth took pride of place at the party as merry guests tried, and often failed, not to knock them over.

Retro pinball machines and a brass band added to the entertainment.

Father Paul Thomas of St James’s Church in Sussex Gardens, who described himself as a “devoted member of SEBRA” was among those enjoying the party.

He praised John Zamit’s work in scrutinising building plans, comparing him to the “Eye of Sauron of planning applications”.
“He sees everything,” he said. “If there is anything that might blight the landscape, he’s all over it. He’s the sort of person who would call up mayor Sadiq Khan or the leader of the council and give them what for. He champions the people well.”

Fellow guest Dorrie Lang said: “I’ve had a fabulous time. I think this is one of the best garden parties you can come to.

“It’s fantastic.”
