MEMBERS from St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club were handed a hard-hitting treat over Easter when Dereck “Del Boy” Chisora paid a surprise visit to their gym in Kentish Town.

The heavyweight is busy training for his upcoming rematch against Robert Helenius in Finland on May 27.

But that didn’t stop the 33-year-old from finding the time to pop by and watch the young Saints in action.

St Pancras head coach CJ Hussein, who is part of Del Boy’s training team, said: “Having someone of Dereck’s calibre pay us a visit is really great for the kids.

“He’s seen as a wayward figure in the world of boxing but, behind the scenes, he’s always respectful and always has time for young boxers.

“He was happy to pose for pictures and sign autographs, and gave the kids plenty of tips and advice.

“He knows what the boxing game is all about and with all his experience is a great role model.”

Derek isn’t the only big-hitter that has visited the gym in Talacre Road recently.

Newly-crowned European champions Juho Haapoja, who beat Leonardo Bruzzese to capture the European Boxing Union cruiserweight title, and Anthony Yigit, who defeated Lenny Daws to capture the European super lightweight title, also stopped by.

The pair are also both trained by CJ, and he says that having them around the gym is all the motivation that his young fighters need.

“When our young boxers see professionals like Juho and Anthony, with their new belts, sparring alongside them, it reminds them why they have to work so hard in training.

“For wannabe boxers having a European champion at the gym is as inspirational as it would be for a footballer to be invited to the park to have a kick-about with David Beckham. It’s a dream come true for them.”
