Waiters dash to the line in the fun-packed street event

With a drag queen finale and a real live cow on the cards, this year’s Soho Village Fete looks like it will be brighter and better than ever.

Head down to St Anne’s Gardens, Wardour Street, on Sunday for the 43rd annual festival, featuring traditional snail-racing, spaghetti- eating, alpine horn blowing and human fruit machine games.

The family-friendly fair will be bursting with an eclectic array of stalls and events including the signature tug of war.

The fun starts at noon and continues until 6pm.

Lisa Sheehy, Soho Fete co-ordinator, said: “We will have all the usual favourites as well as some exciting new performers and a real cow! We have the belles of London City female Morris dancing troupe, Ruby, Minnie Diamond and friends doing a drag finale and the fabulous Lounge Swingers. Come to support your local community charity the Soho Society – which has been keeping Soho special since ’72.”

She added: “This year is especially great because we will have a health and wellness tent providing an oasis of calm in the usual sea of craziness.”

In 2015 the Soho Society revived a much- loved tradition, the waiters’ race. This year the event returns at 3.30pm outside the French House pub in Dean Street.

Traditionally dressed waiters will race around Soho Square, down Greek Street and towards the finishing line at Gerry’s Wines and Spirits in Old Compton Street.

In this year’s race, staff across Soho’s culinary scene will compete to raise money for new charity the Soho Hospitality Workers Benevolent Fund, as well as winning the much-coveted Soho Waiters’ Cup.

Performances this year will include The Fabulous Lounge Swingers, Ruby Venezuela, students from Soho Parish School, Ian Beetlestone and the Drowned Rats, a Marlene Dietrich impersonator and a ukulele orchestra.

There will also be a range of food from Thai in a Pie, What the Dickens, More Tea Vicar? and The Soho Kitchen. Soho Village Fete raises money for The Soho Society and is run entirely by a group of volunteers.

Sunday July 2 at St Anne’s Gardens, Wardour Street, W1, from 12-6pm. Entry is free. The Waiters’ Race starts at 3.30pm
