The new season of MetLive opera screenings gets under way on Saturday (October 7) with Bellini’s masterpiece Norma starring Sondra Radvanovsky as the Druid priestess and Joyce DiDonato as her arch-rival Adalgisa. Other MetLive operas being screened this autumn include Mozart’s Magic Flute and Thomas Ades’ The Extertminating Angel.

• The excellent Bach Players are celebrating their 20th anniversary with an exciting all-Bach programme Sound the Trumpet concert this Saturday evening (October 7) at St John’s Downshire Hill, Hampstead. Performing with the ensemble are soprano Rachel Elliott and trumpeter Adrian Woodward.

• Carlo Grante, one of Italy’s foremost pianists, is playing in the Ninth Planet Tree Music Festival at Rosslyn Hill Chapel, Hampstead, this Saturday evening (October 7). In a new approach to audience listening, Planet Tree audiences are invited to lie down if they wish, thereby relaxing into the sound worlds.

• Jazz in the House is back at Lauderdale House next Thursday evening (October 12) with an opening set by legendary harmonica-player Adam Glasser’s Quartet. Others lined up to play on subsequent Thursdays are trumpeter Damon Brown’s Killer Shrimp, fantastic jazz singer Christine Tobin, Leon Greening Trio and multi-reedsman Julian Siegel’s Quartet.

• Sergei Eisentein’s 1925 masterpiece Battleship Potemkin is being screened with live music accompaniment in the Royal Festival Hall next Thursday evening. Vladimir Ashkenazy is conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra in a performance of music drawn from the symphonies of Shostakovich.
