School expansion gets green light

St George's RC School in Maida Vale to make room for 150 more pupils

Headteacher Martin Tissot says school is ‘significantly oversubscribed’

A SECONDARY school will be expanding to make room for 10 classrooms with provision for 150 more pupils.

St George’s RC Secondary School in Lanark Road, Maida Vale, will build a new three- storey block, covered rooftop play areas, and a sixth-form common room.

An existing block will be demolished to make room for the scheme. The building works, which will begin in June, have been approved by Westminster Council.

Headteacher Martin Tissot said: “Demographics in the area are such that more places are required and St George’s, as a high achieving and Ofsted ‘outstanding’ school, is significantly over-subscribed.”

One objector to the application said: “I suggest the school is demolished and moved to another area and the existing space converted to a park and green wildlife area for the benefit and enjoyment of local residents.”
