Seduction, Parisian romance, a Viennese comedy and a medieval English legend are featured in the upcoming Opera Holland Park 2018 season.
The OHP season opens on May 29 with Verdi’s La Traviata in what promises to be a terrific staging by international opera director Rodula Gaitanou. Super young soprano Lauren Fagan is Violetta. She enjoyed great success as Donna Anna in last year’s Don Giovanni at OHP. There are 11 performances through to June 17.
Next up on May 31 for eight performances is Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte in a staging by former OHP director Oliver Platt – he produced OHP’s Don Giovanni last year. There’s a strong cast of young singers including English National Opera regular Sarah Tynan as well as veteran Australian baritone Peter Coleman-Wright, a regular at the New York Met.
Then, moving into July, it’s Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos in a co-production with Scottish Opera. It opens on July 17 for five performances. Director and set designer is Antony McDonald and outstanding American soprano Mardi Byers doubles up as Prima Donna and Ariadne.
Lastly, OHP is continuing to put on rarely seen opera with a production of Pietro Mascagni’s Isabeau opening for five performances July 14. Actually, it’s the UK premiere of the piece by the composer best known for his Cavalleria Rusticana. Written in 1911, the opera relates the legend of Lady Godiva, and super French soprano and OHP regular Anne Sophie Duprel sings the title role.
