Racism in sport is intolerable
01 March, 2019
• FURTHER to your report concerning the World Paralympic Swimming Championships (Mark Field hits out at athletes ban, February 15), Malaysia intended to ban disabled Israeli athletes from competing purely on racist grounds, in other words only because they are from the state of Israel.
Such racist attitudes should be consigned to history, for example the 1936 Nazi Olympic Games. The comment that this was “in solidarity with Palestinians” is not true.
Firstly, a ban on Israeli athletes does not even help Palestinians. Secondly, Malaysia and other countries should offer material support if they want to help the situation in the Middle East. Racism in sport, particularly for disabled athletes, should never be tolerated.
