Put number plates on compulsory helmets for cyclists
14 December, 2018
• HELMETS for cyclists ought to be compulsory, like seat belts for motorists. There might be some initial opposition but the benefits in saving lives will soon outweigh the disadvantages.
Another scheme worth exploring is the inclusion of number plates on such helmets. In this way anti-social and criminal cyclists could easily be identified and reported.
Currently cyclists remain outside our modern culture of surveillance. Although most are considerate towards pedestrians, many are not and injuries and even deaths can occur.
So Bournemouth has recently installed speed signs along its promenade after a grandmother was badly hurt by a cyclist riding at 20mph.
Pavements were never designed for cyclists and it always proves impractical to mix cyclists with pedestrians, the most vulnerable of road users.
