Tipped hats in the direction of playwrights Dr Michael Sherburne and RA Diamond for scooping the prizes in the annual Shaw Society Playwriting award.

The pair won first and second prizes respectively in the annual competition, organised by the Shaw Society, for their entries.

The competitions brief was to create either a sequel, prequel or interlude to Shaw’s 1933 play On the Rocks or write a new, short play based on world events today and imagine how Shaw might have approached them when turning such issues as Brexit into something dramatic and stageworthy.

The two winners will claim their prizes of £500 and £200 on Monday October 1 in Covent Garden and then sit back and enjoy seeing their words read by professional thespians.

Shaw Society chair Dr Anne Wright told Diary: “The judges were unanimously impressed by the two winning plays. They are inventive, witty, perceptive and sheer fun. If Shaw were alive today, he might well choose Brexit as a theme.

“And I am sure he would enjoy these two plays.”

Diary looks forward to a night of Shavian wit and insight.
