Up for the cup: schools teams at the qualifiers

SCORES of talented young footballers will descend upon Market Road tomorrow (Friday) in the hope of getting their hands on some much sought-after silverware.

After two tough qualifying rounds this week (pictured right) eight teams will head back to the artificial pitches to battle it out for the Islington Primary Schools Cup.

Run by the Islington Football Development Partnership (Islington Council, GLL and Arsenal in The Community) and the Health and Wellbeing Team, more than 180 players have taken part in the tournament. Organisers are now discussing plans to expand the competition next year.

“It was a busy week with lots of matches and some really good football played,” commented Football Development Manager Michael MacNeill. “We had even more teams this year than ever before. If we get many more we may have to move to three days of heats next year to accommodate everyone.”
