AS friends and family prepare to mark the first anniversary of the death of a teenager stabbed in Caledonian Road, detectives are still waiting to bring his killer to justice.

Nedim Bilgin’s murder sent shockwaves through the families in the surrounding area with his friends still struggling to come to terms with what happened to the 17-year-old.

A group of people were seen running away from the spot near Tilloch Street where Nedim was attacked, but no charges have yet been made by the police. Officers say they will not give up.

Nedim, who had attended St Mary Magdalene Academy and grew up near the Caledonian Road, was attacked last year on January 29.

Stephen Griffiths, a director at the Copenhagen Youth Project club which Mr Bilgin attended throughout his childhood, said: “Nedim’s friends are struggling with what has happened here.

“They are struggling with the murder of a friend and they are struggling to grieve.”

He added: “The legal process is long and for that reason it drags it out further without any resolution.”

A shrine was made in Tilloch Street in the days after Mr Bilgin’s death.

Dozens of young people gathered there and released balloons, cried and sang songs in memory of their friend.

Mr Griffiths added: “If you want to take positives out of this, which is very difficult, Nedim’s friends have a goal to remember their friend, that has brought them together.

“He is a young man who is really missed, not just by young people but by all the staff here as well. He was a larger than life character, for us he disappeared as well.”

A knife was found close to the scene after the stabbing. Four teenagers and a man of 22 were arrested in the days after the attack but they have all since been released.

A spokesman for the Met Police said: “The investigation into the murder of Nedim Bilgin remains ongoing. Five males have been arrested and remain under investigation.”

He added: “Nedim’s family have been kept updated with any significant developments and a specially trained family liaison officer remains in place to support them.”

We approached Nedim’s family but they did not wish to speak at this time.

Mr Griffiths said: “He is a big loss, he was very respectful and supportive and a friend to everyone in the area.”
