Oar inspiring children help to clear up canal

A YOUTH charity and Islington Boat Club teamed up to clear Regent’s Canal of litter this week.

The Islington Great Spring Clean was due to be held in March but was delayed by the outbreak of coronavirus.

Using the Planet Patrol app to record the amount of litter in the canal, children from the Prospex charity took to the water on Tuesday.

Sirrena Williamson, 13, said: “I was really disgusted at how much plastic and trash was in the canal, and I was worried about the fish, ducks and swans eating the plastic or getting their wings and beaks caught. I really wanted to do this project as I care about the environment and I really hope we can help.”

Alan Hopson, senior youth worker at Prospex, said: “The young people made lots of comments about the litter and it sparked conversation back at our youth club, so I asked the young people if they would like to do something about it.

“Lots of them agreed so we approached the boat club about helping them to clear the surrounding canals with a litter-picking session which we hope to be the first of many such social action projects where Prospex can help to make our local environment a better place for all.”
