Noel’s Kenwood House party

20 February, 2020 — By Róisín Gadelrab

Noel Gallagher will be part of this summer’s Kenwood House concerts

A PRIDE party, an epic dancefloor hitmaker, a ska extravaganza and an indie stalwart – this year’s Heritage Live Concert Series at Kenwood House pays tribute to some of the big movements of the past 50 years.

While we don’t yet know if any further names will be announced (the concert count has been reduced in recent years), for at least four evenings this summer (June 18-21) the party vibes – and some more dour indie guitar strains – will ring across Hampstead Heath for an extended weekend.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Village People, Sink The Pink, Nile Rodgers and Chic, David Rodigan and the Outlook Orchestra and Noel Gallagher lead the names for Heritage Live’s outdoor series of concerts. This is what we know so far:

THURSDAY, JUNE 18

Party on the Heath with Pride in London – New LGBTQ Pop Celebration – ft Village People, Sophie Ellis-Bextor & Sink The Pink and more.

The series kicks off with a huge LGBTQ party featuring cult 70s disco group Village People, famed for their trademark outfits and dancefloor hits YMCA, Macho Man, In The Navy and Go West – marking their 40th anniversary with original lead singer Victor Willis.

Disco queen Sophie Ellis-Bextor teams up with LGBTQ collective Sink The Pink, known for their flamboyant club nights, to present her new show Press Play. The set will run through the singer’s back catalogue, with Sink The Pink helping to bring the accompanying videos to life on stage.

The one-off celebration, in association with Pride London, will collect donations for the LGBT Foundation and mental health charity MindOut.

There will also be a DJ set from international club staple, DJ and producer Jodie Harsh, and performances from London Gay Men’s Chorus – previewing pieces from their upcoming Union Chapel show Proud – and London Gay Big Band, a 20-piece jazz orchestra made up of predominantly LGBT musicians and vocalists.

Pre-sale tickets go on sale today (Thursday) with general release tickets on sale tomorrow.

FRIDAY, JUNE 19

David Rodigan & The Outlook Orchestra ft Freddie McGregor, Horace Andy & Bitty McLean, plus support from Yolanda Brown, Norman Jay, Don Letts, Channel One Soundsystem and more TBA. The weekend starts for real with a huge dub and reggae line-up courtesy of DJ, broadcaster and champion of reggae music David Rodigan. Following a number of acclaimed collaborations, Rodigan and the Outlook Orchestra – born from a Southbank Centre commission in 2016 – will perform a one-off exclusive set at Kenwood where they will be joined by special guests including Bitty McLean and Jamaican superstars Freddie McGregor and Horace Andy, who is also known for his extensive work with Massive Attack.
The carefully selected support acts include top selectors Norman Jay, BBC 6Music tastemaker Don Letts, one of the world’s most respected sound-systems – Channel One – and world-renowned saxophonist and composer YolanDa Brown.

SATURDAY, JUNE 20

Nile Rodgers & CHIC, plus Soul II Soul. While Nile Rodgers.

The multiple Grammy award-winning composer, producer, arranger, and guitarist with the Midas touch, continues to be as prolific as ever. He and Chic have had something of a live revival in the UK in recent years, performing at Hyde Park, the Royal Festival Hall and the O2 Arena among others. Now they are bringing their hit-packed set to Kenwood – you can almost guarantee that every song in the show will be a dancefloor-filler.

Supporting are pioneering British soul act Soul II Soul.

SUNDAY, JUNE 21

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Noel Gallagher brings his 11-piece High Flying Birds to Kenwood where he will perform classics from early Oasis albums, alongside hits from his solo albums and 2019 EPs.

The current line-up includes former Oasis bandmates Gem Archer, Mike Rowe and Chris Sharrock.
