No refuge for residents in Barnsbury estate hall

19 October, 2018

• THE Barnsbury estate seems to be neglected and abandoned by our landlord, Newlon Housing Trust.

Residents used to own the community hall on the estate, but they took it off us. With the latest problem – an electric power cut – Newlon should have offered the hall as a refuge point.

There were families suffering along with their children for up to eight hours, panicking with nowhere to go. They couldn’t feed their children because fridges were not working. They couldn’t charge their phones to call for help.

Yet Newlon did not offer any information to tenants. It was left to the on-site team from Barnsbury Estate Local Management Organisation to reply to residents, saying power would be back on in two hours. It was false information. The estate is definitely out of control because no one cares.

Tenants should have been offered refuge in the hall during the power cut, but Newlon has ownership of it to make a profit by hiring it out instead. In their eyes, it’s not about building a community; they would rather make money instead.

Newlon said when it took over our estate that it wanted to build a community spirit. If it really wanted to do that then it should give us our hall back. Bring back Islington Council, because it’s better the devil you know.
