New plans for the planning chief

06 October, 2017 — By John Gulliver

Cllr Phil Jones

I HAVE come across an email sent on August 26 to all Labour councillors by Phil Jones who has stood down as the borough’s planning chief – and become an employee of a large firm of planning consultants, Turley Associates, as a “planning assistant”.

Turley was involved with two controversial projects – tower blocks in Swiss Cottage in Somers Town.

“As many as you are aware,” Cllr Jones writes, “I have been studying for an MSc at the Bartlett School of Planning, UCL, and have recently been offered a job working in urban planning. To become professionally qualified, I need to work full time for at least two years before completing further assessment, and so I think it is best for me and the council that I focus on this new challenge in the years ahead.”

He points out that as both he and Cllr Theo Blackwell will leave the Cabinet it now has the chance to select two new members. Blackwell has stepped down to join the London Mayor’s office.

Cllr Jones makes it clear he will stay on as a councillor. He praises Camden’s “principled” leaders – Sarah Hayward and Georgia Gould, and “lots of brilliantly talented, kind and loyal people in the Labour group alongside me”.

And he looks forward to “working” with fellow councillors delivering “more positive change” to win the 2018 election.
