Aaron Ramsey: ‘We’ll see what happens, but my agent and the club are talking’

AARON Ramsey has given fans a pre-season scare by admitting he is uncertain about his future at Arsenal.

The midfielder has entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Emirates Stadium, and his agent is currently locked in negotiations over a new deal.

Gunners gaffer Unai Emery has made it clear he wants Ramsey to remain at the club, saying he “wants to work with” the Welsh international, who boasts “the ambition” he wants and is “an important player”.

With the new season just under three weeks away, Ramsey remains tight-lipped on whether or not he will still be an Arsenal player when the new campaign kicks off against champions Manchester City on August 12.

“We’ll see what happens, but my agent and the club are talking,” he said.

“I’m not sure exactly what it hinges on, I’m just leaving it to them to discuss and to figure it out, but we are yet to come to an agreement.

“That’s something that my agent and the club are discussing to try and get something done.”

When asked how long he believes it will take for a resolution to be reached, Ramsey added: “I’m not sure exactly. It’s taken a bit of time so far so we will have to wait and see.”

Supporters will secretly be hoping that Ramsey’s remarks are little more than gamesmanship, and that he is fully expecting to stay in north London.

But there will be one major departure, according to reports, with rumours that chief executive Ivan Gazidis is set to join AC Milan as executive director in September.

Gazidis, who arrived at the Emirates in 2008, was the man largely responsible for replacing Arsene Wenger with new head coach Emery.

Emery’s arrival came after an overhaul of the club’s structure by Gazidis, who brought in head of football relations Raul Sanllehi from Barcelona and former Borussia Dortmund scout Sven Mislintat as head of recruitment.

Arsenal are apparently “aware” of speculation around Gazidis’s future but say he has rejected multiple offers in the past.

Chairman Sir Chips Keswick said his colleague has “always been fully committed to taking the club forward”, adding, “He has never accepted any of these opportunities and has never spoken about them publicly.”
