CONCRETE security barriers have been put up outside Lord’s Cricket Ground in the wake of a number of attacks in London where cars and vans were driven into crowds.

Lord’s said the barriers, which were installed ahead of last Saturday’s Royal London One Day Cup Final, and the first test match against South Africa this week, were “hostile vehicle mitigation”.

Critics have called for the barriers to be made to fit in better with their surroundings if they are to remain.

Cricket fan and former London Assembly Member Murad Qureshi said:“I was taken aback but in light of the recent attacks it’s not surprising. My only concern is that if these are going to be made permanent that they be in keeping with the landscape of St John’s Wood and Lord’s Cricket Ground itself.”

A Lord’s spokesman said: “There is no specific threat to cricket or to Lord’s but security must be MCC’s top priority. We have had lengthy conversations with the Met Police and it was agreed that this was a sensible course of action given the profile of matches that Lord’s will be hosting.

“Those barriers will be in place until completion of the England-West Indies test in mid September.”

As for the future security of the ground, he said: “We are investigating all options regarding future years to include a permanent solution but we haven’t got to decide that right now. No decision has yet been made on a permanent solution. It’s a fine balance. Safety has got to come first.”

Meanwhile, a multi-million pound redevelopment of the ground has already begun.

An MCC spokesman said: “Lord’s will be extensively redeveloped in the next few years. Doing nothing is not an option. Lord’s needs to be the best cricket ground in the world, it must move with the times and some areas of the ground are suboptimal.

“We want everyone to have the best experience they can when they come to Lord’s.”
