Anne Sofie von Otter performs in Bernstein’s Candide at the Barbican on Saturday
THERE are three London Symphony Orchestra events at the Barbican over the next week.
Firstly, this Saturday evening (December 8), conductor Marin Alsop is leading a performance of Bernstein’s satirical operetta Candide, an outrageous odyssey of misadventure. Soloists include Leonardo Capalbo, Jane Archibald, Anne Sofie von Otter and Sir Thomas Allen.
Next Wednesday (December 12), starting at 6.30pm, it’s LSO’s Half Six Fix. Promised is an infectious hour of jazz beats and Latin rhythms with a classical flavour from Sir Simon Rattle, clarinet soloist Chris Richards and piano duo Katia and Marielle Labèque.
Next Thursday (December 13), Rattle is delivering a concert of Folk Roots: Latin American rhythms, toe-tapping jazz and Eastern European folk music. Items include Stravinsky’s Ebony Concerto, Bartok’s Hungarian Peasant Songs and Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs.
