Locals can be proud of our studios ‘win’

22 May, 2020

• I AM delighted that Historic England have awarded the legendary Maida Vale Studios a Grade-II listing.

I decided to apply for the building to be listed as, despite calls for it to be saved, I was not aware that anyone else had submitted an application.

A Change.org petition to save the studios has had over 10,000 signatures, showing the strength of feeling it inspires.

The BBC are unlikely to stay in Maida Vale, either way, since they are already planning to move to a purpose-built venue in Stratford. But many of us would hate to see it knocked down to make way for luxury flats.

The BBC objected to the listing, perhaps fearing the depreciation of their valuable real estate.

The humble licence fee payer has a stake in this too, though, and original examples of pre-war broadcasting studios surely deserve to be preserved.

Well done to Historic England and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport for recognising the unique place in our heritage occupied by the studios, which, arguably, have put Maida Vale on the map.

Locals can be proud that we’ve won the latest Battle of Maida.
