Holy Cross Church now open for music

25 July, 2019 — By Michael White

HOLY CROSS Church in Cromer Street is a jewel of Victorian gothic revival architecture that no one knows about, because it’s hidden away in a backstreet of King’s Cross and usually locked.

But a new project called Open for Music has just been launched to try and raise its profile – with events on the second Saturday, third Thursday and fourth Friday of every month.

The general format will be concerts; but the Friday events will be open rehearsals at which you can experience distinguished (sometimes VERY distinguished) artists preparing for a formal concert elsewhere. And this Friday, July 26, at 11.15am, you can hear the celebrated Paul McCreesh take his Gabrieli Consort and Players through Purcell’s semi-opera The Fairy Queen.

If there’s anything similar to this initiative going on elsewhere in London, I don’t know of it: it’s definitely special, possibly unique.

And all you have to do is turn up – at Holy Cross Church, Cromer Street, WC1H 8JU.
