THREE top fighters from Islington Boxing Club will be hoping to punch their way to glory this weekend when they step between the ropes for the National Elite Championships.

Cherrelle Brown, Amy Broadhurst and Mason Smith will travel up to the Magna Centre in Rotherham on Thursday ahead of the weigh-in and draw on Friday, with the quarter-finals being held later that day.

The semi-finals of the event, formally known as the ABA Championships, will be held on Saturday and the finals on Sunday.

Light-Welterweight Cherrelle will be looking to secure a hat-trick of wins in the Under-64kg category having captured the elusive title two years on the spin at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

Lightweight Amy is entering the Under-60kg competition for the first time, but will be a hot favourite to land gold having won the National Irish Championships no fewer than 14 times.

Mason will also go into the National Elite Championships in extra confident mood having recently been named as No 1 seed at lightweight by the GB boxing team.

Carlos Moreno has been expanding his “Moreno Boxing” business while away from the ring

The 20-year-old will be looking to become the first male senior boxer to win the Elites for Islington since light-heavyweight Courtney Fry way back in 1996.

Meanwhile, Islington Boxing Club are hosting their fifth and final home dinner show of the season on Friday May 12 at the Royal National Hotel in Bloomsbury.

Among the fighters expected to feature is Carlos Moreno, who will be returning to the ring for the first time in over four years after taking a break from the sport.

Moreno is a former London Novice champion, Haringey Box Cup gold medallist, NW London Elite champion and London Elite finalist with the Hazellville Road-based club.

Dinner tickets for the show cost £70, while standing tickets are £20. Call 07921 724 601 or email ibcmc@hotmail.com to book or for further details.
