Gunners plotting late transfer swoop

Arsenal boss Arteta set to be ‘really busy’ as summer window closes

01 October, 2020 — By Steve Barnett

Mikel Arteta: ‘With a few days to go I think it’s going to be really busy for the clubs because not much business has been done – let’s see what happens’

WITH the summer transfer window about to slam shut, nervous Arsenal fans will be frantically checking the breaking news alerts in the hope of new arrivals.

But with the Gunners first needing to raise funds and bring down their wage bill before making new signings, it’s the departures that will prove key.

Mikel Arteta has repeatedly made it clear that the club “don’t discuss the things that we try to do in the market”. But the Arsenal boss still expects to be “really busy” before Monday’s 11pm deadline.

He said: “We don’t have any news on new players. With a few days to go I think it’s going to be really busy for the clubs because not much business has been done. Let’s see what happens.

“We are still open to improving our team. We are looking for different options depending on what happens with some of our players, so we are getting prepared just in case we need to do something.”

A hectic final few days in this window looks set to start with a much-needed cash injection, with Bayer Leverkusen reportedly closing in on a £9million deal for Sead Kolasinac. The left-back is deemed surplus to requirements with Kieran Tierney now first choice, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Bukayo Saka can also fill in as wing-backs.

And Lucas Torreira also has one foot out of the door, with rumours circulating that his agent has already landed in Spain to finalise a move to Atletico Madrid.

Any potential transfer will prove far from easy, however. Atleti are said to want Torreira on a season-long loan, but Arsenal need money in the bank and are only interested in offloading the 24-year-old in a permanent deal.

To make the situation even more complicated, the Gunners need the cash so that they can potentially give it straight back to Atleti by triggering Thomas Partey’s £45m release clause.

Partey has been Arsenal’s top transfer target all summer with Arteta desperately looking to reinforce his midfield.

But with Atleti seemingly unwilling to accept Torreira as part of any deal, are the Gunners about to miss out on their man at the last minute?

Meanwhile, Arsenal have until close of play tomorrow (Friday) to sign another of their top targets. A fee in the region of £40m-plus will be enough to land Lyon’s French playmaker Houssem Aouar.

But in a potential power play, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has reportedly declared he will not do any business past October 2 – even though deadline day is three days later.
