Gerald Finley heads fundraiser at Razumovsky Academy

I HAVE mentioned before the secret jewel that is the Razumovsky Academy: a place that looks like a small shop in Kensal Green but turns out to be like the cupboard in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – revealing, as you pass through the doors, a chic performance space, perfect for chamber music.

Run by the Russian cellist Oleg Kogan, it’s a centre for teaching and performance but gets no public funding. So it relies on money-making events. And there are two coming up in support of student scholarships: one next Tuesday when Kogan and friends play Bach, Ravel and Schubert; with another on Wednesday when the celebrated baritone Gerald Finley and leading accompanist Julius Drake bring Schubert, Rachmaninov and Britten.

You don’t often find big names like Finley singing gigs in Kensal Green, so this is special. And if you buy the right ticket you get a meal as well as the recital. Culture on an empty stomach never was a good thing.

• Razumovsky Academy, June 11 and 12, 7pm, 56 College Road, NW10 5ET. Booking: razumovskyacademy.co.uk
