A YOUNG runner raced past the competition finishing a 5k race in an astonishing 16 minutes and 46 seconds.

Yasmin Marghini, a student at Pimlico Academy, finished in first place in her category of Under 15 girls in the London Borough Challenge of last Sunday’s Mini Marathon.

She beat around 200 competitors and took fourth place nationally – for the second year running – beating her personal best by 30 seconds.

Yasmin said: “It was great how everyone was cheering as well, especially around Big Ben and St James’s Park, and everyone was really happy when I crossed the finish line.

“I’m also running the Westminster Mile in May, which I won last year. I’m hoping to win again, and I’m really hoping to break the course record for my category – last year I ran the course in 5.01 minutes, and the record is 4.59 so I was only two seconds off!”

The Westminster Mile has categories for all ability levels, including Olympian athletes, new runners, wheelchair users and families.  It takes place on May 28 in Green Park.
