PRIMARY schools from across Camden and Islington are being invited to sign up for an action-packed programme of sport in 2018.

Haverstock School will be hosting a series of free tournaments, including football, basketball, cricket and even trampolining, in a bid to “share the fantastic facilities” at the secondary school in Chalk Farm.

A taster session of what’s in store saw teams from Rhyl School in Kentish Town, St Luke’s School in Hampstead, Brookfield School in Highgate and Rosary School in Belsize Park take part in the Haverstock Under-10s Football Championships on Monday night.

After two weeks of scintillating action, it was the boys and girls from Brookfield who were jumping for joy after they were crowned champions.

In fact youngsters from all the schools had reason to celebrate, with St Luke’s collecting the Fair Play Award, while Erjon Shaqiri from Rhyl and Princess O’Neill from Rosary received the best boy and girl of the tournament awards respectively.

“Our number one goal is to get more young people involved in sport,” said organiser Jamie Histed. “So for the football competition, for example, one of the rules was that every team had to have at least two girls on the pitch in every game. We also had young volunteers from Haverstock helping to run the event, with Mergim Krasniqi and Bardia Tahmasebi, who are both 12, refereeing.

“We have some fantastic facilities at Haverstock, including a new football pitch that was opened in February. We want to share them with the wider community.

“We’ve got some big plans for 2018, and I’m inviting primary schools from across Camden and Islington to drop me an email, share their ideas and get involved in our 2018 sporting celebration.”

Next up, Haverstock are holding a sports camp during the February half-term, with a wide range of activities. Aimed at nine to 12-year-olds, it will cost £2 a day. To find out more email Jamie at jamie.histed@ haverstock.camden.sch.uk
