Drop in on The Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition

05 April, 2018 — By Sebastian Taylor

There’s a great opportunity to hear a dozen up-and-coming string quartets next week in the 2018 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, starting on Tuesday. What’s more, most recitals in the Tuesday-Friday preliminary rounds are free and you can just drop and out as you like. Tickets are only required for the semi-finals and finals on Saturday and Sunday.

Most recitals in the preliminary rounds are being given at the Royal Academy of Music in Marylebone Road. But quite a number are being played at other venues including St Pancras, Euston Road; St Martin-in-the-Fields; St Bride’s, Fleet Street; St James’s, Sussex Gardens; and St James’s, Piccadilly.

Set work for all quartets is Thomas Adès’ The Four Quarters. At St Pancras Church, for instance, the Quatuor Tchalik is giving a lunchtime recital on Tuesday, playing a Bb major quartet by Haydn and the Thomas Adès piece.
