A CALL for donations has gone out to help refugees in the Calais “Jungle” as winter descends on the camp.
Mum Nike Johnson will be joining other Islington residents and workers next Saturday in a convoy to deliver donations of desperately needed money and clothing to refugees stranded on the other side of the channel.
Tomorrow (Saturday) supporters of Islington Stand Up To Racism will be collecting donations outside Angel tube station, from 2pm to 4pm. Anyone wishing to join them would be welcome.
The convoy, organised by Stand Up To Racism and Care4Calais, will be seen off by Labour peer Alf Dubbs, who last year succeeded in getting Parliament to amend its Immigration Act to bring over 3,000 unaccompanied children and young refugees from the Continent. The government later declared the scheme closed with just 480 refugees – only 200 of whom have made it to Britain.
As well as delivering much-needed solidarity and provisions, the convoy aims to focus attention on the plight of the refugees escaping war and persecution in their countries of origin and the government’s “callous indifference” to it.
Ms Johnson said: “Many people think that there is no longer an issue with refugees living in terrible conditions in the Jungle in Calais.
“However, there are still loads of men women and children in Calais and the surrounding areas without the basics needed to live, such as food and clothes.
“Me, other Islington Council workers, residents, and other organisations like the Islington Pensioners’ Forum, have collected money and other necessities to take to the refugees to make sure they get some help and support to survive the Winter.”
Local trade union branches, including the UCU, UNISON and the NEU have made donations .
