Dan Carrier’s movies news: A Fistful of Dollars; Devil’s Freedom

Clint Eastwood in A Fistful of Dollars

OH joy! The author of this column finds there is nothing more cinematically satisfying than watching a classic Western – but finds himself doing so more often than not alone in the early hours of the morning when a TV station deems it worthy to stick a Spag W on to fill a graveyard slot.

So aim your six-shooters in the air, wave your 10-gallon around your head, slap your greasy Levis and shout yee-haw! The BFI on the Southbank is showing the awesome A Fistful of Dollars on Sunday. Clint Eastwood is Joe the gunfighter who rides into town and plays off two rival factions against each other.

Saddle up and sit back – this is Sergio Leonie at his finest.

Add to this a special talk by Leonie’s biographer, Sir Christopher Frayling, laying bare the great director’s story tomorrow (Friday), as an introduction to the great gunslinger adventure Once Upon A Time In The West. See whatson.bfi.org.uk

The Bertha DocHouse crew, based at the Curzon Bloomsbury (what was previously the dear old Renoir in the Brunswick Centre), are a splendid feature on the London film scene: a lovely space to watch films, coupled with a unique programming policy that makes them stand out.

With a timetable of just documentaries, every week they have something not available elsewhere.

This weekend you can check out Devil’s Freedom – a film that tells the story of the awful drug war ripping through Mexico. See dochouse.org/
