COUNCILLOR Tim Roca narrowly avoided a moped phone snatch this week as he walked down the Strand on his lunch break.
The Harrow Road ward councillor held on to his Samsung for dear life as a moped rider tried to yank it from his hand in broad daylight on Monday.
The councillor recalled how three mopeds – one with a pillion rider – slowly rode past him.
He told Diary: “We had a bit of a tussle. It seemed like a long time but it was probably only two seconds. I couldn’t believe that they are so brazen to be doing it in broad daylight. And there is nothing you can do in terms of ID-ing them as they have dark helmets.”
Cllr Roca is the latest to be hit by the wave of moped- enabled crime in Westminster. A recent council report revealed such crimes are up 25 per cent in the past year.
Cllr Roca, who works at King’s College, said since the snatch he had become more worried about other people using their phones to navigate their way around town, particularly tourists.
“It’s how brazen it is,” he said. “I will certainly be more educated about having my phone out in public.
“I was really angry, I was very lucky I managed to hold on to mine.”
