Circus performers add to the Oxford Street switch-on glitz
TRAFFIC came to a standstill in Oxford Street for the annual Christmas lights switch-on.
The lights stretching along the 1.5-mile shopping street include 1,778 baubles and 750,000 LED bulbs.
This year’s switch-on event on Tuesday saw performances from circus acts for the first time and home-grown music talent including British grime and R&B stars.
There were DJ sets from radio station Capital XTRA’s Yinka Bokinni and Robert Bruce.
More than 90 stores took part in the celebrations with extended opening hours, offers and festive “experiences” – ahead of seven weeks of events leading up to Christmas.
The New York Brass Band performed along with eye-catching LED poi dancers, and there was entertainment from festive Joy Jesters.
Luciana Magliocco, a director at the New West End Company, said: “Oxford Street is synonymous with Christmas, and as a trend-leader famous for ‘firsts’, we reimagined the traditional switch-on with a brand new format championing some of the UK’s emerging music talent. With tonnes of festive activity lined up over the next seven weeks, Christmas has officially begun in London!”
