Lawrence Santos is now in jail
DETECTIVES say they have jailed a “dangerous” man who beat up his girlfriend after drowning her kitten.
Lawrence Santos from Bourne Terrace, Paddington, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and one count of criminal damage at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old was sentenced to 14 months in prison and issued with a five-year restraining order against his former partner who was bruised and cut on her face, arms and legs during a vicious attack. A huge row was sparked after Santos killed a kitten, according to police.
“Santos is a dangerous individual who killed a defenceless animal before viciously attacking his girlfriend,” said DC Isabella Grotto, the investigat- ing officer from Westminster’s Community Support Unit.
“I’d like to praise the victim’s incredible bravery for both escaping from Santos on the evening and for assisting police throughout the investigation so we could secure today’s conviction,” she said.
“I’d also like to praise the bystanders on the evening who rushed to the victim’s aid and called the police.
“I hope [the] conviction and sentencing gives the victim a measure of comfort and closure.”
On August 13 last year – at around midnight – Santos woke his girlfriend to say he had given five-month-old Mimi a “bath” and now she was not responding.
Police said a violent row followed that saw Santos punch, pin, slap and try to strangle the woman. The woman ran out into the street in a dressing gown and tried to call a taxi but was dragged back by Santos. Bystanders rushed over to help and called the police.
He was charged with two counts of assault by beating, two counts of criminal damage and two offences under the Animal Welfare Act.
