Camden and Islington share the points after dramatic late equaliser

Camden Youth winger Tierney Gallagher goes up against Islington Borough’s Ava Jones during the 1-1 draw at Regent’s Park in the Under-15s Division of the Capital Girls League

THE spoils were shared on Saturday after neighbouring rivals Camden Youth FC and Islington Borough Ladies played out a 1-1 draw in the Under-15s Division of the Capital Girls League.

Before kick-off it looked like a certain three points for Camden, who are riding high at the top of the table. So there was little surprise when their striker, Lauren Oliver, opened the scoring at Regent’s Park.

Despite conceding both a goal and possession, however, Islington showed great resilience to stay in the game, and were rewarded at the death when captain Lily Jones scored an injury-time equaliser after some good interchanges between Grace Campbell and Latifa Mammeri.

After the game Islington manager Pete Samways revealed how it was a game that could easily have never happened.

“After the early goal went in we didn’t drop our workrate or commitment, and I was pleased with the general performance of the team, in particular how we played without the ball,” he said.

“It’s great to see the girls doing so well. Early in the season it looked like we might not have enough players to fulfil our fixtures.

“But we ended up signing a few new players, who have been excellent, plus we’ve had a lot of support from our parents, which has really contributed to the successes we’re seeing now on the pitch.”

The result leaves Camden top, although their closest rivals, Broomwood FC, are now just a point behind with a game in hand.

Manager Billy Millar said his team paid the price for failing to take their chances.

“The match was a tightly fought affair,” he added. “We were leading 1-0 for the majority of the game and created several good chances but weren’t clinical enough in front of goal.

“Unfortunately we went down to 10 players towards the end of the game due to an injury and ended up conceding a late goal, so honours were even.”

• CAMDEN Youth are looking to strengthen their squads, and, in particular, are searching for a goalkeeper for both their Under-13s and Under-15s teams. Anyone interested should email Kirsty Pealling at Kirsty.Pealling@camden.gov.uk
