Berlin-based trio FJAAK and Detroit house man Andres are among those lined up for EggLondon’s 15th birthday celebrations
EggLondon – the home of 24-hour clubbing in the heart of King’s Cross – is set to mark its 15th birthday with a long weekend of celebrations.
Radio Slave, Terrence Fixmer, Andres, Hodge, Metalheadz record label and many more have been signed up to preside over the festivities. Celebrating 15 years of London nightlife, electronic music and rave culture, EGG LDN will party through its milestone by unveiling new refurbishments and renovations on the first night of birthday festivities on May 4 – although the line-up for the Friday is yet to be revealed.
Phase one of the latest refurb will reveal a sleek KV2 Audio sound system alongside a new lighting rig across the Main Room. The party on Saturday begins in the daytime with Gold Diggers, a hedonistic house and disco event, while Saturday night will be soundtracked by Rekids label boss Radio Slave,
Berlin-based trio FJAAK, Detroit house man Andres, Tobi Neumann, Hodge, Phon.o, Kyle E, Mira Joo, Jay Shepheard, Zaki, Luther Vine and more and a Novamute showcase on the middle floor with top techno acts Terrence Fixmer, Daniel Miller and Nicholas Bougaieff. Drum & bass bosses Metalheadz bring events to a close on Sunday.
And, to mark the occasion, many of those connected with the famous venue have been sharing their memories of the club’s history.
Resident DJ Kyle E said: “Laurence Malice, the owner of the venue, is a great visionaire as he is constantly making changes to the venue.
“There have been some funny times. I have witnessed Laurence say ‘I would like to take this DJ box down’ or that ‘needs to go’ – you would think he is joking as the venue needs to open within 48 hours. However, the next thing you know, it’s happened and you realise it was a great decision.”
He added: “Working at a venue in London means you also get to meet some weird and wonderful people, from politicians’ children to Hollywood actors and everything between.
“We have also had some of dance music’s greatest acts pass through the doors over the last 15 years and play on our sound system. I have had the pleasure to work with some great people, from the late, great Frankie Knuckles, through to Danny Tenaglia, Sven Väth and Laurent Garnier and many more.”
General manager Spencer Wyatt said: “I have so many great memories, some I can tell you about and some I can’t. But my favourite times were when we had the garden open in the summer, day or night it was amazing. Looking down from what was then the middle floor outdoor terrace over the garden and everyone dancing and having a good time made me very proud to be involved in making it happen.”
Staff at Egg have had the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the club scene’s greats.
Deputy manager Lisa Allen said: “Working at Egg through the years has enabled me to not just meet but hang out and chat music with some of the most influential artists in the world.
Hanging out with David Morales has to be up there in the many privileged situations I have found myself in. After an amazing set we talked family, friends and all things house. He then insisted we spent the rest of the night on the dance floor. It was a night to remember.”
Laurence recalled celebrations for long-running hard-house night Trade, which marked its 25th birthday at Egg back in 2015.
“This party was the perfect amalgamation of the two brands I have dedicated my life to. The energy for that one night was electrifying. I truly believed that Egg was Trade’s true home for that one event,” he said.
The venue’s 24-hour nature has allowed it to capitalise on the Sunday post-clubbing crowd. Hans Hess, who is part of the venue’s events team, said: “Sunday mornings in Egg’s garden stand out as some of the best memories I have had in my years of clubbing – so many fantastic events unique to London clubbing. As always I had my bag in hand for all eventualities and a big smile to go with the family atmosphere.”
And the club hasn’t restricted its efforts to hosting big parties.
Events manager Gabriele Cutrano said: “The launch of our record label, the winning of the DJ Mag Best of British Awards and the happening development of the club and all the friendships I made are all special moments that I will never forget.”
