DETECTIVES are still searching for the killers of a 16-year-old boy who was stabbed to death, even though a second man was convicted of the murder this week.
Abdirahman Ibrahim, 20, waited in a car as his associates killed Alex Smith in August 2019. But he was told that his involvement amounted to murder and he will now return to court later this month when he could be handed a life sentence.
Police said the young men who dealt the killer blows had not been tracked down and may have fled the country. Four suspects are possibly hiding abroad, investigators believe.
The trial heard how Alex, who grew up near Holloway Road and had been a pupil at Acland Burghley School in Tufnell Park, died after a tit-for-tat feud between gangs in Camden and Islington.
Ibrahim was one of six young men who had been driving around the Fitzrovia and Euston Road areas on the night Alex died.
They were looking for rivals, the trial heard, and travelling in two stolen cars – a Ford Fiesta and a Seat Leon – both using false number plates. Alex and some friends had left a restaurant when they were spotted.
They ran to an estate on the north side of Euston Road to take refuge, Inner London Crown Court was told, as the two cars pulled up and three men got out before running into a block of flats looking for him.
Alex was attacked with a “short sword” blade and left for dead. The six then made off in the two cars.
Paramedics were unable to save him and he died from a wound to the chest.
A mural depicting Alex with angel wings was later painted close to the scene.

Detective Inspector Jamie Stevenson, who is leading the investigation, said: “Alex was targeted by a rival gang which Ibrahim was part of. The six gang members acted together to chase down Alex with fatal consequences.”
“All of those who were present in those two vehicles, regardless of whether they got out and chased on foot or remained in the cars, were party to his murder.”
The three males who carried out the actual attack on Alex and the driver of the Fiesta have not been traced, but police said that enquiries were ongoing in a bid to find them.
Asif Biomy, now 20, was jailed for life last March. He was also sat inside one of the stolen cars when Alex was wounded.
At sentencing, he was told he must serve a minimum of 21 years.
Yusuf Yusuf, 20, was jailed for two years and 10 months for assisting an offender after being accused of destroying the two cars following the murder.
Ibrahim will be sentenced on April 30.
