Sebastian Taylor’s music news: Master cellist Alban Gerhardt; legendary Mingus Big Band; Pagliacci; Bach Players

A NEW Kings Place series featuring four musical “masters” of their instruments opens this Friday (October 12) with a recital given by German master-cellist Alban Gerhardt playing Bach, Reger and Britten. Other musicians performing in the series are pianist Janina Fialkowska playing on Friday January 11; pianist Steven Osborne on Friday February 8; and the Schumann Quartet on Friday March 22.

LEGENDARY ensemble the 14-piece Mingus Big Band is returning to the Ronnie Scott’s jazz haunt in Soho next Monday (October 15) for a six-night run. Expect a fantastic sound from the band comprising two tenor saxes, two altos, one baritone sax, two trombones, one bass trombone, three trumpets, bass, drums and piano. (Till Saturday October 20.)

RUGGERO Leoncavallo’s greatest opera Pagliacci – the second half of the Cav & Pag twosome – is getting two performances at the King’s Head Theatre, Upper Street, Islington, this Sunday (October 14). The Irrational Theatre’s staging is by former Royal Opera House assistant director Paula Chitty who has a fantastic list of credits to her name. Should be fun.

THE crack Bach Players, led by Dartmouth Park violinist Nicolette Moonen, are performing Bach’s late work Musical Offerings next Thursday evening (October 18) at St John’s Smith Square. The piece is being performed in the dazzling context of works by two of Bach’s musical friends, Buxtehude and Telemann.
