THERE were mixed fortunes for two female fighters from Islington Boxing Club on Sunday when they stepped between the ropes for the pre-quarter-finals of the National Development Championships.
Competing in the Under-54kg Female B category, Laura Weis had her sights set on defending the national title that she won last year.
Churchill Boxing Club’s Bianca Hayes had other ideas, however, and won an entertaining bout at the Dagenham Roundhouse in east London via a close 3-2 split decision.
There were better fortunes for clubmate Sunni Torgman, who booked a place in the quarter-final stages after gaining a unanimous victory over Banbury Boxing Club rival Petra Bartakda in the Under-60kg Female B division.
Two-time National Development finalist Torgman will now travel to Southampton this weekend to join Islington BC teammates Ruhel Miah, Odera Okwuosa and Jacob Johnson in the last eight of the prestigious competition.
Islington BC, which is based in Hazellville Road, Upper Holloway, also had boxers fighting on the White Hart Lane Academy Show in Tottenham on Saturday.
Club manager Reggie Hagland said Emma Fitzgerald “would learn” from her defeat against Haringey Boxing Club’s Cristina Plannas.
Fitzgerald was retired by her corner just before the end of the opening round – the towel being thrown in after the referee had given his second count of the round.
Hagland said: “Emma will learn a lot from the defeat and what comes with the different levels of amateur boxing, having previously fought in two white collar contests.”
Meanwhile, 10-year-old Dylan Gibson, who weighed in at 34kg, geared up for his first competitive contest this weekend by taking part in a skills bout against Jimmy McDonagh from White Hart Lane Boxing Academy. Gibson fought well throughout his skills showcase, and will go into his bout this weekend in confident mood – an opponent has yet to be announced.
